Lined Curtains

What are Lined Curtains?

Lined curtains have an added lining layer on the back of the curtain which can be attached to the curtain or can be hung on a separate track behind the curtain.

Lining is a cost-effective addition to help protect your curtain fabric, while providing some added insulation for the home (even more so if they are thermally lined). Lined curtains provide added privacy, making it harder to see through and into the window, especially at night. They are also a great option for adding structure to your curtains and creating a nicer drape. Protecting your furniture from sun damage is another way that lined curtains have an advantage over unlined curtains. At CurtainStudio, we have readymade lined curtains and attachable linings as well as custom lined curtains, with options to suit all budgets and tastes.

Readymade:

Our readymade range of lined curtains have something to suit all needs, from draping styles, different fabric and texture styles. The separate polyester lining of our readymade lined curtains creates a custom look, protects the curtain fabric and adds an extra layer of insulation. If your current curtains are unlined, we also have attachable linings available, which clip onto the back of your curtains to give you all of the added benefits of a lined curtain.

Custom Range:

We have a huge range of custom fabrics which can all be lined for insulation, protection and added privacy. Our range includes sheers, light, dark and printed fabrics in a range of textures and different drape styles. We have three types of linings in our range which are Satin Lined, Triple-Weave or “Sun Out” Linings and Coloured Satin Linings. Each of these linings serve a different purpose.

How do I choose the Custom Lining that is right for me?

Our Satin Lined linings come in three different fabric types. The first is the Exoline, a polycotton, entry level and our most affordable lining. This lining is lightweight and works well in behind a really thick fabric, or for someone who has double glazed windows and wants some added privacy. With Exoline, it does pay to be careful about wet/damp areas, as this lining doesn’t have any anti-mildew properties in it.

The second in our range is the Satin Lined 1-pass. This lining is the most popular for use in living areas, it is a good source of insulation due to it’s a thermal lining. This lining is light-weight and gives good structure to any drape. Although this lining features anti-mildew properties, it does let a little bit of light, making it ideal for living spaces but not so much bedrooms.

The next step up in lining is the 3-pass Blockout which is a favourite in bedrooms. The 3-pass Blockout is a 3-layer lining, which has a layer of black in the middle to keep out the light. This lining also features a good structure for draping and stacks nicely. This lining can be paired with a Sheer or curtain fabric and is our most effective lining for insulation and saving on heating costs.

Our Satin Lined linings come in 3 different sizes and can be used in different ways. One thing they share is that they all have great structure, which makes the curtain drape really beautifully.

Our Triple-Weave or “Sun out” linings are fully machine washable (only if on a separate track at the back on its own). These linings, come in different colours, which is an ideal choice for matching to the colour of a really light sheer.

Our other style of coloured linings are our Coloured Satin Lined which are the ultimate 3 pass Blockout. They come in a range of colours, but unlike the Triple-Weave linings, the back is white which means the colour won’t fade in the sun. These linings are ideal for Roman Blinds or for anything that need a more structured look.

The most significant difference between the two types of coloured linings are the way in which they drape, Triple-weave linings are not going to give you as much structure as the ultimate 3-pass Blockout, but they are also going to be a lot fuller curtains.

Will My Custom Curtains Need Lining?

With any of our drapery fabric, lining is recommended, while our Triple-Weave fabric is self-lined. Our Sheers pair nicely with a lining to create a soft and elegant feel to the room but with added privacy and insulation. Not all curtains need lining, however it will help to protect the fabric in any case and extend the life of your curtains.

Design Tip:

Opt for a double track, which allows you to hang a sheer for daylight privacy and a lining curtain on the back for insulation.

Do Lined Curtains Block Out Light?

Different linings offer different levels of light-filtering, however our Triple-Weave and 3-pass linings are the best for filtering light and keeping the sun out.

Our custom and readymade lined curtains come in a variety of different heading styles, to suit any room in the home and any décor. See our range of readymades online or speak to one of our design consultants for a Custom quote.
